Government Description
NORFOLK HARBOR SOUTHERN BRANCH MAINTENANCE DREDGING INVOLVES MAINTENANCE DREDGING BY MECHANICAL DREDGE IN THE SOUTHERN BRANCH OF THE ELIZABETH RIVER, PART OF THE NORFOLK HARBOR FEDERAL NAVIGATION PROJECT. INCLUDES DREDGING DESIGNATED AREAS TO REQUIRED DEPTHS OF -41 FEET AND -36 FEET MLLW, WITH ONE FOOT OF ALLOWABLE OVERDEPTH, AND TRANSPORTING APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CUBIC YARDS OF DREDGED MATERIAL BY BARGE OR SCOW FOR PLACEMENT INTO THE CRANEY ISLAND DREDGED MATERIAL MANAGEMENT AREA (CIDMMA) VIA DIRECT PUMP-OUT. THE CONTRACTOR IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR OPERATING AND MAINTAINING CIDMMA SPILLWAYS, ENSURING EFFLUENT WATER MEETS STATE WATER QUALITY REQUIREMENTS, AND COORDINATING WITH PORT OF HAMPTON ROADS MARITIME USERS TO MINIMIZE IMPACTS ON VESSEL TRAFFIC AND ADJACENT UTILITIES. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE ADHERING TO RESTRICTIONS WITHIN THE CIDMMA DURING NESTING SEASON FOR PROTECTED BIRD SPECIES, WHICH MAY AFFECT ACCESS AND OPERATIONS IN CERTAIN AREAS.
