Research Type
Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) Phase II
Title
Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Power System
Abstract
Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) is proposing a novel, modular fuel cell system based on very high power density stacks with internal reforming. The innovation consists of designs providing improved tolerance against thermal cycling, vibration, and re-oxidation. PCI's Microlith -based internal reforming enables uniform temperature distribution, higher fuel utilization, and avoids carbon formation. These innovations result in a ruggedized design with improved durability, power density, and efficiency. The robust fuel cell system can overcome the thermal cycling and fast heat-up limitations of conventional SOFC's, enabling faster startup and long cycle life. A lightweight balance of plant system for a 1kW generator will be developed based on design and engineering capabilities demonstrated in other fuel cell power system projects.
Research Objective
The goal of phase II is to continue the R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II.
