Abstract
To address the Defense Health Agency (DHA) need for a low-cost, low-size, -weight, and -power (SWaP), wearable radio-frequency (RF) detection system, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (Intellisense) proposes to develop the new Wearable Radio-Frequency Detection (WARN) device based on passive RF detection plus micro-power digital conversion and recording in a novel arrangement that achieves breakthroughs in SWaP and cost compared to existing technologies. Specifically, innovations in resistively damped fractal antennas, a passive RF detection core, electromagnetic shielding, and tight mechanical integration will meet all DHA requirements. As a result, the device will provide a re-usable, rugged, long-life device that can be widely distributed on the battlefield to reliably detect and record any injurious RF exposure while also signaling to the users of immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) exposure in real time. In Phase I, Intellisense will analyze RF bioeffects in relation to common U.S. and ally military RF equipment as well as potential enemy weapon system emission levels and frequencies to determine optimal detector threshold sensitivity. Based on extensive experience in this field, Intellisense will also design a low cost, low SWaP, low false positive, easily readable, and wearable RF weapon exposure detector prototype that will demonstrate full functionality for the target application. In Phase II, Intellisense will review any non-open source information regarding military RF systems and RF bioeffects provided by government and based on that information will further develop and test sensor components. Intellisense will advance the prototypes to a production representative state while testing actual system performance in a representative environment, submitting prototypes for operational utility evaluations, and conducting environmental testing.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization.
