Development of an Automated Vascular Access Device

Abstract
Vascular access is among the first and most critical steps in the stabilization and treatment of critically injured soldiers and civilians. In the field, where patients are volume-depleted from blood loss or dehydration, vasoconstricted, or hypothermic, traditional peripheral venous access and CVC access becomes exceedingly difficult. We propose a self-contained device that significantly simplifies the cannulation process by reliably and rapidly automating vascular access. Our approach leverages an array of Creare-developed technologies and off the shelf products to form an integrated system. In Phase I, we will develop a preliminary design for a prototype system and demonstrate overall feasibility. In Phase II, we will develop a prototype system and will evaluate its effectiveness. In Phase III, we will validate the technology through clinical trials and will use that data to obtain FDA clearance.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization.
