Abstract
In Phase I Spytek will develop and demonstrate a low volume, high performance engine system, T301, to power Air Launched Effects (ALE) unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for increased operational capability. In support of high performance requirements of the T301, such as low weight, in the .5hp/lb range and 1.2lb/hp-hr SFC, and 1000-2000 hr/TBO, maintaining an envelope of 10 inches square by 21 inches in length, with little noise, Spytek will study, design, modify, manufacture and test advanced ceramic coated component parts (combustor liners, nozzle guide vanes) in its J302-GMX-2 turbojet developed under a SOSSEC program to support the design of the 25 to 30 hp T301 turboshaft engine to be manufactured in Phase II of this effort. In the Phase I option, complete SN282 ceramic components (radial turbine) would be evaluated for use in Phase II of this effort. Spytek will define performance parameters/interface constraints, of using ceramic components, and TBCs in various engine parts. Spytek will also demonstrate feasibility through limited modeling and simulation but will rely where possible on actual engine testing of the components, namely the SN282 ceramic turbine in the T301 engine as part of Phase II.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization. STTRs are completed in conjunction with a research institution.
