Title
Parallel Intermixing of Lithium-Ion 6T Batteries with Dissimilar Chemistries
Abstract
Recognizing the superior performance of Lithium-based batteries the Army is leading an effort to create a drop-in replacement for their Tank and Automotive Lead Acid 6T battery packs. The new Lithium-based 6T battery packs will be used for automotive starting, lighting, ignition, and auxiliary electronics, which include engine off/silent watch, and potentially other future applications within the Army and other branches of our military. The Lithium-based 6T battery pack specification, currently under development, is agnostic to cell chemistry and several manufacturers develop 6T battery packs following this specification with different cell chemistries. The Army is looking for a technology that will allow them to interconnect Lithium-based 6T battery packs in parallel and independently of chemistry in a flexible and efficient manner while gaining in performance and cycle life. X-wave Innovations Inc., and its partners propose a technology that accomplishes this tasks efficiently and regardless of chemistry in a way that minimizes size, weight, and uses lower power components when compared to conventional approaches. The use of lower power components results in a system having smaller impact on reliability and cost. The overall interconnected battery system combines unique algorithms and hardware that uses every pack and every chemistry to the best
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization.
