Title
Integrated Female Trauma Simulation Architecture
Abstract
This effort aims to address two main problems: the need for an open architecture to support the integration of simulation components for a best in class female trauma simulation system, and the need to include medical simulation in the Synthetic Training Environment (STE). Since no existing product on the market meets all of the needs for a female trauma simulation system, a hybrid solution using an open architecture to integrate the components is ideal. Additionally, adding medical simulation to the STE architecture will improve the realism of tactical training events such as squad room clearing exercises. IVIR Inc. proposes the use of the Joint Emergency Trauma Simulation (JETS) architecture to address both problems. JETS is an architecture based on the High Level Architecture (HLA) standard that enables data interoperability between dissimilar medical simulation and training systems. JETS provides a collated view of the patient generated by the disparate systems responsible for parts of the hybrid simulation system. JETS is modular and scalable to support the changing needs of medical training. The modularity supports a hybrid system, such as adding an augmented reality module to a patient simulator to support specific training goals. The scalability enables support from low to high fidelity simulations, single to multi-patient events and single to multi-site events. Its scalability means that JETS can act as the single architecture for both a single female trauma simulation system, and for integrating that system into the larger STE architecture. JETS can provide the open architecture solution desired by the Government to support creating a best in class medical simulator for female patients. JETS can be used to integrate various modalities to support a single patient training event, allowing the modules to be swapped as needed to support custom training events. The modularity and scalability of JETS is well suited to meet the needs of the project by avoiding vendor lock-in and by providing a solution that can be used both today and the future, adapting to the changing needs of medical training. In the future, JETS can continue to expand to support larger scale medical exercises in additional STE components, including the Next Gen Constructive (NGC) component. JETS can be used to provide medical simulation data from thousands of simulated patients to entities such as the Patient Evacuation Coordination Cell (PECC) and to a Medical Brigade Tactical Operations Center responsible for area-wide logistics and patient movement decision making.
Research Objective
The goal of phase II is to continue the R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II.
