OVERVIEW

Original Description
FOR THE TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS COMPONENT OF THE UPCOMING DESDYN IR MISSION, NEW CHALLENGES HAVE EMERGED RELATED TO HOW TO MAKE BEST USE OF THE MISSION TO MEET THE NEEDS OF TERRESTRIAL ECOLOGY AND ECOSYSTEM'S COMMUNITY WITHIN THE CONSTRAINTS OF THE REDUCED MISSIONS CAPABILITIES AND COST LIMITATIONS. PRIMARY AMONG THE EFFECTS OF THE ELIMINATION OF THE LIDAR COMPONENT FOR THE MISSION IS THE INCREASED DIFFICULTY IN ASSESSING FOREST STRUCTURAL PARAMETERS, SUCH AS STAND HEIGHT, DENSITY AND BIOMASS, WHICH PUTS AN ADDED EMPHASIS ON COMPARATIVE APPLICATIONS IN TERRESTRIAL ECOLOGY, SUCH AS CHANGE DETECTION, SEGMENTATION AND CLASSIFICATION. THE CHANGE IN MISSION CAPABILITY ALSO CREATES AN INCREASED SCRUTINY ON THE ACCURACY OF EXISTING RADAR ONLY METHODS WHICH RELATE BACKSCATTER POWER AND POLARIMETRIC PRODUCTS TO FOREST BIOMASS IN THE OVERALL SYSTEM FORMULATION. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO MAKE A STRONG CASE FOR THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR, PROF. PAUL SIQUEIRA, TO BECOME PART OF TERRESTRIAL ECOLOGY COMPONENT OF THE DESDYN IR SCIENCE DEFINITION TEAM (SDT). THE BASIS FOR THIS PARTICIPATION REQUEST IS FOUNDED ON THE PROPOSER'S BACKGROUND IN RADAR SYSTEMS ENGINEERING, SYNTHETIC APERTURE RADAR (SAR) AND INTERFEROMETRIC SAR (INSAR) PROCESSING AND ALGORITHM DEVELOPMENT, AND THE APPLICATION OF THESE REMOTE SENSING TECHNOLOGIES TO APPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH NASA'S TERRESTRIAL ECOLOGY PROGRAM. THIS PROPOSAL PROVIDES A BRIEF REVIEW OF THE PROJECT'S RELEVANCE TO NASA'S STRATEGIC GOALS FOR EARTH SCIENCES, A DETAILED SUMMARY OF THIS PROJECT'S GOALS AND OBJECTIVES, AND THEN A TECHNICAL PLAN THAT DESCRIBES THE PI'S SPECIFIC EXPERTISE AND HOW IT APPLIES TO THE UPCOMING NEEDS OF DESDYN IR'S SCIENCE DEFINITION TEAM.
