SBIR Details

Research Type
Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) Phase I
Title
Kopin AI Displays for Lensless Computational Imaging
Abstract
Kopin's objectives for the program include leveraging our existing transmissive LCD micro-displays as a foundation for testing new liquid crystal materials aimed at achieving a high frame rate capability, essential to the Navy's goal of computational imaging. Step one in Phase 1 is to determine which Kopin display most closely aligns with the success criteria and to conduct a feasibility study. Then Kopin will outline testing and evaluation criteria that will illustrate our progress when tests are conducted in Phase 2. In Phase 1's Option 1, Kopin plans to evaluate liquid crystal materials and address gaps in the current hardware. Modeling, simulation and comparison to similar developments will be used to justify design decisions ahead of Phase 2. Kopin expects this SBIR process to include adjustments and improvements in pixel size, cell gap uniformity and increased frame rate. The impacts of these changes on the display's total performance across temperature and other expected environments will need to be evaluated. Kopin will also transition from twisted nematic (TN) Liquid Crystal (LC) technology to another proprietary method of switching that is known to achieve much higher frame rates. This, combined with faster switching liquid crystal materials, optimized alignment layers and Kopin's expertise in LCoS technology will ensure the best chance of success.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization.
