SBIR Details

Research Type
Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) Phase II
Title
Low-Cost MCM Sound Velocity Profiler Based on MASED
Abstract
The LCS Mine Countermeasure (MCM) Mission Package (MP) System Subsystem Specification (SSS) includes requirements to provide Sound Velocity Profile (SVP) and Conductivity measurements in the Mine Threat Area (MTA). To date, measurement tools to meet this requirement have not been identified. These measurements are critical for the MCM USV (Unmanned Surface Vehicle) and UISS (Unmanned Influence Sweeping System) systems. Boston Engineering will expand upon the work done to date on a NOAA PHII SBIR project to modify an existing low cost aircraft-deployed expendable sonde/sensor to meet the needs of the MCM MP. The expendable Conductivity Temperature and Depth (CTD) sensor will profile the MCM MP MTA multiple times and provide data to MCM MP systems for planning and monitoring of sea conditions. To date there is no concept or operational data collection system that can fulfill the operational need so the objective is to profile the water column multiple times over a 12-24 hour period as the CTD drifts in the MTA. Location and profile data will be transmitted back to the host platform for mission planning or verification of environmental conditions for PMS406 and PMS420 and other stakeholders if appropriate.
Research Objective
The goal of phase II is to continue the R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II.
