Abstract
Increasing temperatures at military training sites in already hot and humid environments coupled with decreasing physical fitness levels of recruit trainees make monitoring and preventing heat illness more important than ever. R&D initiatives have been pursued to help address these challenges, such as the Heat Illness Prevention System (HIPS). Although HIPS has advanced research in algorithms for important risk measurements such as core temperature estimation, and physiological strain indices, HIPS has not been able to scale to full deployment or be self-managed in operation and maintenance by warfighting units. In response, Aptima and its partners VigiLife Inc. and Ohio State University are developing MITHRIL (Measures Integration Toolkit for Heat Risk Intervention Logic). When complete, MITHRIL will be a wearable heat strain assessment system operating on a modern, secure, and scalable technology stack that can proactively alert individuals and their teammates to high-risk situations. The goal is to prevent/mitigate heat strain/heat illness incidents so they do not become life-threatening emergencies.
Research Objective
The goal of phase II is to continue the R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II.
