Abstract
The Compact Rapid Attack Weapon (CRAW) is a very lightweight multi-mission torpedo with a 6.75 diameter that is launched out of a countermeasure tube. Its mission is to neutralize offensive weapons with the highest kill probability which is commonly achieved through maximum speed and maneuverability, that in turn, is achievable with increased power density. Numerous researchers have shown that thermal battery technology offers maximum possible battery-based power density by both volume and weight, although the maximum run time remains a challenge. At room temperature the thermal battery is inert allowing it to be safely handled and stored for over 20 years in a submarine environment before use. CFD Research thermal battery technology consists of a proprietary cathode, electrolyte, anode and pyrotechnic energy source that give it superior power density to lithium-ion and most other energy storage methods under consideration for the CRAW system. In this SBIR, CFD Research proposes to design an afterbody for the CRAW based on its thermal battery technology. The Phase I analytical efforts include: Thermal battery definition capable of sourcing over 100 HP at >600Vdc; Electric motor definition capable of continuous 100 HP for up to 10 minutes; Small form factor battery/motor controller and associated system containment definition within a 6 diameter by 38 in length weighing less than 67 pounds; Assurance that all Naval abuse and safety standards are exceeded. The Phase I option will include development of conceptual and detailed design specifications and capabilities to be implemented within the Phase II prototype deliverable. One or more prototype 100 HP electric powerplant systems configured to CRAW architecture will be delivered upon conclusion of Phase II for independent Navy test and evaluation at Penn State University's Applied Research Lab. During Phase III CFD Research will team with Raytheon and Aerojet to transition this technology into a low-rate initial production phase in a similar fashion to past DoD-sponsored missile system motor demonstration efforts.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization.
