Abstract
The Technical Objective for this Phase II effort is to develop, build, and deliver a large format Ni-Zn cell intended to be used in a submarine main storage battery. As laid out in the conclusions and recommendation of the Phase I Final Report, this cell will have a nameplate capacity of about 1,000 Ah with an aspect ratio (height to width ratio) of about 1.2. Following the Phase I recommendations, the cell electrodes will have tabs extending the entire length of the cathodes and this will improve current density distribution and enhance energy and power efficiency. Some of the key parameters for the deliverable cell is: Capacity: 1,000 Ah Nominal Voltage: 1.65 V Aspect Ratio: 1.2 Weight: ~55 lbs. Height: 16.55 in. Top footprint: 14.34 in. X 3.52 in. Base footprint: 13.78 in. X 2.95 in. During the 12-month, Base period, sir intends to build 16 ~1,000Ahr prototype cells and deliver 12 of these to the Navy for testing and evaluation. In the Option 1 phase, sir would order additional parts for up to 12 cells and produce those deliverables within 6 months from the end of the Base period. These 12 units would be delivered to NSWC Crane for additional testing and evaluation. In the Option II Phase, sir will provide engineering technical development and performance improvement support services for all sir Technologies, Inc. ( sir) produced Nickel-Zinc (NiZn) cells that are currently being produced, designed, and tested for use on US Navy submarines, as well as all future sir manufactured US Navy NiZn cells upon request by the Government during the Period of Performance (POP) of this contract.
Research Objective
The goal of phase II is to continue the R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II.
