Title
FOD and Corrosion Mitigation for a CV Joint
Abstract
The constant velocity (CV) joint for the Marine Corps' Amphibious Combat Vehicle requires excessive maintenance due to damage from foreign object debris (FOD) as well as seized bearings due to corrosion. CV joints, specifically variants of the Rzeppa and tripod joint, are used in the majority of drive axles because of their smooth power delivery and high continuous torque capabilities. These joints are covered in a layer of grease for lubrication, debris protection, as well as temperature regulation and protected using a rubber boot. However, this protective boot can be punctured or torn when operated in austere terrain. A punctured CV boot quickly renders the CV joint inoperable as the lubricating grease evacuates, exposing the critical bearing components to corrosion and wear. Therefore, Mainstream will experimentally demonstrate a two-prong approach: a protective shield that allows for the full range of motion while mitigating impact and FOD damage as well as corrosion resistant, wear resistant, and low friction coatings to the joint internal components.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization.
