Research Type
Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) Phase I
Title
Nano-Power Generators with Electricity Emitting Nano-Diodes
Abstract
The goal of this project is to demonstrate our high-energy and high-power density solid-state nano-power generation (NPG) system with with our new novel nano-dimensioned solid-state electricity emitting diodes referred to herein as nano-diodes. Our nano-diodes utilize exothermic catalytic surface reactions to efficiently generate and capture hot electrons before reaching thermal equilibrium and without combusting the energy source. Hot electrons come from the nano-diode s catalyst-conducting surface. Our Nano-Power-Generator (NPG ) system comprises nano-diodes, energy source and air delivery systems, and exhaust and thermal management systems. The system has energy density per unit mass up to twenty times that of comparable battery. The same system can use a variety of liquid and gaseous energy sources, such as hydrogen, ammonia, ethanol, biogas, or natural gas. NPG systems are neither batteries, nor fuel cells. Our nano-power generator system weight without the fuel source is estimated at 0.4 kg/ kW.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization.
