SBIR Details

Research Type
Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) Phase II
Title
Extreme Cold Simulation Training Environment for Medic Education (ECSTREME)
Abstract
For this Phase II SBIR project, Vcom3D will research and develop a modular Mixed Reality (MR) Extreme Cold Simulation Trainer for Medic Education (ECSTREME). The system will build on available Modular Healthcare Simulation and Education System (MoHSES) open standards, interoperable modules, and open-source resources. We will demonstrate and evaluate an ECSTREME system that includes each of the following: A high-performance, MoHSES-compliant trauma manikin with an accurate simulation of Massive bleeding, Airway, Respiration, Circulation, and Hypothermia/Head wound injuries and interventions. It will also include interchangeable limb modules exhibiting frostbite and multi-trauma. An advanced, open-source physiological simulation of hypothermia, hypoperfusion, and acidosis. A virtual patient and virtual equipment. At least three patient scenarios that include cold-related injuries. The ECSTREME system will be demonstrated and evaluated in relevant Arctic of Extreme Cold Environments (AoECE), such as Arctic Edge Below Zero Medicine (BZM).
Research Objective
The goal of phase II is to continue the R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II.
