Abstract
Through its Phase I MDA SBIR program, NanoSonic designed and empirically optimized next-generation polymer derived ceramic thermal protection systems with tailored radio frequency (RF) transparency for missile structures. High temperature flame impingement testing revealed optimized TPS materials readily endured 1,000 C flame impingement for over 60-minutes while preserving the integrity and RF response of inner frequency selective surfaces (FSS). Further, NanoSonic established an adaptable and commercially scalable process for integrating its HybridSil TPS materials onto missile structures to enable high temperature survivability of antennas, sensors, and communication devices. In support of a successful, near-term Phase III transition into current and next-generation missile defense platforms, NanoSonic provided numerous sample sets of its polymer derived ceramic material to a defense prime partner for high temperature testing throughout the Phase I program. Through these efforts, the immediate value proposition of this very promising technology was further validated, and NanoSonic is currently fulfilling multiple purchase orders for its HybridSil preceramic copolymer technology. Approved for Public Release | 19-MDA-9932 (21 Feb 19)
Research Objective
The goal of phase II is to continue the R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II.
