Title
Helios
Abstract
Helios will improve upon current IV blood warmers in several ways. Most importantly, the stainless steel heating element is fully contained within the fluid path, creating maximum thermal efficiency and minimizing unnecessary heat loss into the environment. This provides Helios with the capacity to warm 4 or more units of whole blood at 4 C to 38 C at 300mL/min, exceeding published standards and the capacity of all commercially available portable warming devices. A unique algorithm controls energy flow into the heat exchanger, ensuring uniform distribution of electricity, with the ability to rapidly detect changes in flow rate and adapt accordingly. This mechanism also allows the fluid to reach goal temperature in approximately 10 seconds, rather than the 1-5 minutes required for many commercially available portable warmers.16 Lastly, the Helios will function with battery or AC power, making it much more versatile in a variety of clinical environments.
Research Objective
The goal of phase II is to continue the R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II. STTRs are completed in conjunction with a research institution.
