Title
End to End Encrypted Database Environment
Abstract
Mimir's system, BrunnrDB, creates a virtual, multi-user, asynchronous, serverless SQL database within an End-to-End Encryption environment. The database allows users to modify data while the host server only has access to randomly generated IDs, encrypted data and read flags. This protects DATA-IN-USE. Only industry standard encryption techniques AES256, ECC and SHA256 are utilized. Web Assembly (WASM) and SQLite3 are utilized to instantiate a local' database. Since Web Assembly is included in all major commercial browsers, BrunnrDB does not require locally installed software or browser plug-ins, nor does it require special hardware. The user facing payload' web application software queries the WASM database instead of requesting the identical information from a standard server-based database. The user experience is identical to traditional web applications. Data is encrypted into chunks' and stored on a server repository under a randomly assigned GUID. Using Mimir's proprietary technology, local users can efficiently manage these encrypted data 'chunks' without decrypting the data first. This allows BrunnrDB to only retrieve and decrypt the data as needed. Care is taken to allow for database recovery should the user suddenly close the browser. In addition, Mimir technology allows for each user within the multi-user environment to verify data integrity and resolve collisions without requiring a server to manage the updates. End-to-End encryption is insured by preventing the hosting server from ever having access to the AES256 encryption keys used to access this data. This key is provided by the user upon authentication using a variety of methods.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization. STTRs are completed in conjunction with a research institution.
