Title
Multi-Mode Propulsion System for Dynamic Space Operations
Abstract
Today, propulsion is often characterized as mission specific and spacecraft developers must trade between chemical and electric solutions for performance, mission capabilities, and overall mission results. AGILE proposes a multimode propulsion system that combines high maturity chemical and electric propulsion products, developed by AGILE and subcontractor, Phase Four, into a single-use system. The combined benefits of high specific impulse electric propulsion and high thrust chemical propulsion both running from a single propellant feed system will be demonstrated during the proposed Phase II project. Multi-mode propulsion supports the Space Force technology area for Space Mobility and Logistics by providing a novel solution for sustainable space access and in-space transportation and establishing a critical capability for executing dynamic space operations to ensure US space superiority. The multi-mode propulsion system offers a no-compromises solution for space mobility, allowing operators to maneuver without regret, perform remote proximity operations (RPO), make tactically responsive avoidance maneuvers for enhanced survivability, and tactically responsive space operations.
Research Objective
The goal of phase II is to continue the R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II.
