Title
Ultra-Lightweight Emergency Life Raft Units for the C-17
Abstract
Kennon proposes to reduce the weight and bulk of the three 46-man life rafts carried aboard the C-17 Globemaster III. Kennon has spent the last decade honing manufacturing methods that allow for manufacture of ultra-lightweight and durable inflatable devices and staying on the cutting edge of flexible material technology. By using ultra-lightweight materials and novel manufacturing methods, Kennon proposes to reduce the weight and bulk of the life raft systems by up to 50% while offering increased safety and comfort to stranded airmen. The C-17 is a critical component of the Air Force s Agile Combat Employment (ACE) initiative. Reducing the weight and bulk of necessary lifesaving equipment that will be on board every flight will allow for more capacity for mission critical cargo without sacrificing the safety of the crew of the aircraft.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization. STTRs are completed in conjunction with a research institution.
