Title
An Innovative Approach to Core Body Temperature: Solution for Preventative Mass Screening
Abstract
BlinkThermal s technology, XTEMP, provides instantaneous, contactless core temperature measurement using commercially available thermal cameras. XTEMP collects thermographic data from the surface of the eye, processes it through multiple computational layers, and accurately determines the temperature at the back of the eye, close to the brain where body temperature is most accurate. XTEMP improves the availability of accurate core temperature measurements using cameras small enough to be integrated in smartphones, helmets, etc. ???????Unlike skin temperature, which is altered by external factors, core temperature remains constant unless disrupted by illness or internal stressors. Screening core temperature at the population level is useful in monitoring infectious diseases as this is often the first vital sign to change even pre-symptomatically. Current thermometers used for quick population screening are wildly inaccurate due to environmental factors, recording only 15% of fevers. As DAF continues to expand globally, infection containment will be paramount. On the homefront, mass screening of core temperature will assist military trainees who are experiencing alarming rates of heat illness. 17 servicemembers died of heat illness in the past decade costing the military $1 billion. Early core temperature monitoring can be lifesaving. XTEMP can accurately, and non-invasively measure core temperature at enterprise scale and speed.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization. STTRs are completed in conjunction with a research institution.
