Title
Next Generation Lithium-Ion Battery Technology
Abstract
Piersica, Inc. is a battery technology company accelerating the path to market of safe, solid-state-based lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries with twice the energy density of commodity Li-ion. Piersica's unique solution integrates three proprietary technologies in a new battery cell design: (1) a novel solid polymer electrolyte that is lightweight and compatible with high-voltage cathodes, (2) a cutting-edge 3D lithium metal anode with a high surface area and fast operation rate, and (3) a leak-free Li-rich cathode layer which yields significantly higher capacity and voltage. Altogether, these innovations can provide a gravimetric battery energy density greater than 630 Wh/kg, more than twice that of current Li-ion. Each of the proprietary components in Piersica's battery cell architecture are designed to be scalable, and their fabrication processes are compatible with the existing technologies used by battery manufacturers. Battery cells made with Piersica's membrane separators also benefit from the elimination of the organic liquid electrolyte separator used in standard Li-ion batteries, thus significantly reducing the risk of fire and offering the potential for efficient operation in a much wider range of temperatures. Piersica's electrode technologies can furthermore enable fast charging rates that can fully charge a cell in as little as 20 minutes.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization.
