Abstract
Launcher Rail Bodies are designed to support and guide missiles on military aircraft. Constructed from Al7075?T6, launcher rail bodies exhibit life-limiting wear which currently cannot be repaired. The Air Force spends roughly $2 million per year on the manufacture of new rail bodies to replace ones that could be repaired if a viable approach exists. We propose to develop a Hybrid Additive Friction Stir (AFS) technology to repair launcher rail bodies. This technology leverages all our prior work developing AFS systems. During the Phase I project, we will assemble the proof-of-concept Hybrid AFS system, complete repair testing on relevant materials, and design the prototype for launcher rail repair. During Phase II, we will complete the system design, fabrication, and testing and transition the technology to the Air Force.
Research Objective
The goal of phase I is to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential of proposed R&D efforts and determine the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization.
