Abstract
The U.S. Department of the Air Force is seeking digital data tools as part of their acquisition practice through technical data packages. Current tools and applications in the model-based enterprise and model-based systems engineering ecosystem are limited in the capacity to meet current and future needs for Air Force weapon system procurement, maintenance, and operations. Traceability of requirements in a digital environment using model-based applications is sought using as-designed and as-built computer-aided data streams within the Air Force, through original equipment manufacturers, tier suppliers and vendors, or other stakeholders. Efficient curation of design, manufacturing, and inspection data from these domain specific activities, in native or neutral interoperable data formats, is sought to reconcile machine-readable geometric modeling with associated product and manufacturing information data to an authoritative source of truth model. Technical data package traceability in a model-based paradigm, from source requirements, thorough the digital thread, and to digital twin models using nVariate's authoritative source of truth technology embodied in a software platform is the objective of the outcome of this project. nVariate will develop a software application linking and maintaining a single fit-for-purpose authoritative source of truth model-based definition and its associated product and manufacturing information to a model-based systems engineering model allowing digital technical data package traceability from high-level requirements to low-level information models. The application will be tested using in-situ data collected from relevant selected DoD contractors and original equipment manufacturers at their facilities using a parts assembly selected to embody technical data package traceability requirements where only model-based workflows using a properly defined authoritative source of truth can offer this capability. The expected outcome of this project is a developed and tested software platform that can be transitioned to production level facilities for relevant stakeholders with the U.S. Department of the Air Force.
Research Objective
The goal of phase II is to continue the R&D efforts initiated in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the project proposed in Phase II.
