Background
The solicitation is for the Correct Atrium Fire Protection project at the Durham VA Health Care Center. The project aims to improve the atrium to meet current fire codes by installing a smoke exhaust system, supporting ducting, electrical and fire protection utilities, new fire-rated windows, and atrium roof replacement. The atrium is the main dining area of the hospital, and scheduling of work will be an important aspect of construction schedule.

Work Details
The contractor is required to install a new smoke exhaust system, new supply system, and roof replacement to meet the design requirements. This includes coordinating the installation schedule with Durham VA, with roof replacement anticipated to be done on weekends. The contractor is responsible for providing all supervision, materials, labor, equipment, transportation, testing, and storage for this project.
Specific construction tasks include:
- Adding mechanical/electrical equipment on the roof of the atrium
- Supporting new equipment with structural steel roof framing beams
- Installing new vertical ductwork supported by metal fabrications attached to existing building structure
- Electrical work and connection to existing systems
- Fire alarm installation and connection to existing system
- Fire-rated window replacement inside the atrium at multiple levels impacting administrative office spaces (not patient rooms)
- Demolition of single office space and replacement with a new corridor
- Updating of fire sprinkler system in kitchen storage
- Replacing the existing roofing system.
All material and installation must adhere to state and federal codes as well as NFPA and ANSI standards.

Period of Performance
The period of performance for this contract is 360 calendar days from Notice to Proceed (NTP).

The construction projects will be performed at the Durham VA Health Care Center located at 508 Fulton St, Durham, NC.
