Background
The project is located at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The project purpose is to repair or replace critical park infrastructure and visitor facilities damaged during a 2018 volcanic event. The project is being implemented in Phases. Phase II of the project includes the rehabilitation of the existing Kīlauea Visitor Center (KVC), the demolition and replacement of the existing 1,350 SF comfort station adjacent to the KVC, and the replacement of the existing KVC 3,150 SF lanai with an expanded 6,200 SF lanai.

Work Details
The construction magnitude for Phase II of the project is Greater Than $10 Million - mandatory. The surrounding area is somewhat rural with limited staging. The NPS anticipates unique material delivery requirements. The construction site is approximately 30 miles from nearest suppliers and lodging facilities.

The Park will remain open during construction, thus contract activities and logistics must be structured and scheduled to minimize visitor impact. The site requires protective measures to ensure the surrounding area remains undisturbed. The KVC is a historic resource that requires protective measures during the rehabilitation process. Additionally, there are natural resource concerns. The primary concern is invasives species. Specific protocols associated with cleaning equipment and inspections will be in place to mitigate the potential introduction of invasive species into the park.

Period of Performance
The anticipated period of performance is 16 months including any potential weather shutdown. There are seasonal/other shutdowns mandated through the construction season. Winter construction may be required.
