09 Jan 2026: Submission deadline extended to allow more time for responses.

The United States Air Force (USAF) is issuing this RFI to gather information from industry regarding optimized machining parameters for AerMet 100, a high-strength alloy used in critical aerospace applications. The purpose of this RFI is to assist the USAF in understanding the current state-of-the-art capability in machining AerMet 100, identifying potential solutions and vendors, and refining requirements. The overall objective is to develop and document optimized machining parameters for AerMet 100 to support more efficient manufacturing, reduce waste and rework, and ensure consistent, high-quality output across production environments, with an initial focus on manufacturing parts for landing gear.

This Request for Information (RFI) is issued solely for source planning and market research purposes. It does not constitute an invitation to bid, a request for quotation or proposal, nor does it create any obligation for the Government to procure goods or services.

Background
The United States Air Force (USAF) is issuing this Request for Information (RFI) to gather insights from industry regarding optimized machining parameters for AerMet 100, a high-strength alloy critical for aerospace applications.

The goal is to understand the current capabilities in machining this material, identify potential solutions and vendors, and refine requirements. The objective is to develop and document optimized machining parameters that enhance manufacturing efficiency, reduce waste and rework, and ensure consistent high-quality output, particularly for landing gear components.

Work Details
The USAF seeks information from qualified vendors with expertise in machining high-strength alloys, specifically AerMet 100. Vendors are requested to provide detailed responses covering the following areas:
1. Company Overview: Experience in machining high-strength alloys, particularly AerMet 100; examples of past projects; relevant certifications (e.g., AS9100); R&D capabilities related to machining process optimization.
2. Machining Parameters & Strategies: Recommended or expected machining parameters including cutting speeds (SFM), feed rates (IPM), depth of cut (axial and radial), tooling recommendations (material, geometry, coatings), coolant/lubrication strategies, justification based on scientific principles or empirical data, and impact on tool life and surface finish.
3. Tooling Solutions: Recommendations for tooling solutions including material, geometry, coatings, expected tool life, advantages over alternatives, availability and cost.
4. Material Analysis & Modeling: Capabilities for conducting material analysis and modeling of AerMet 100's machining behavior.
5. Testing & Validation: Capabilities for testing and validating machining performance using real-world geometries; proposed methodology for testing parameters.
6. Standardization & Documentation: Experience in developing standardized practices; approach to creating documentation for training and continuous improvement.
7. Collaboration & Partnership: Experience working with government agencies and research institutions; ability to contribute to multi-phase efforts involving research and development.
8. Cost and Availability: Rough order of magnitude (ROM) for establishing parameters including costs associated with material analysis, tooling, labor; timeline for delivery.

Period of Performance
The contract will be performed over a specified period following the submission of responses by December 22, 2025.
