HALE Fine Art Conservation

Haleakalā National Park (HALE) is located on the east side of the Island of Maui and was established in 1916. The park encompasses over 33,000 acres and includes significant cultural and historical artifacts.

This contract aims to engage an experienced art conservator to perform preventative conservation on a notable painting in the Haleakalā Museum Collection entitled 'Maui Snaring the Rays of the Sun' (Catalog No. 168, Accession No. 36). The goal is to conserve and repair this historic work of art to prevent further deterioration and preserve its integrity.

Work Details
The contractor shall provide all labor, materials, equipment, and means of transportation necessary for the conservation and repair of the painting 'Maui Snaring the Rays of the Sun'. Specific tasks include:
1. Conducting cleaning, stabilization of damage, and fixing structural instabilities of the painting.
2. Providing management and qualified personnel for the conservation effort.
3. Removing protective covers and frames to access the painting for conservation work.
4. Examining and fixing support battens on the backside of the painting.
5. Stabilizing unstable characteristics such as cracking, paint loss, separation between paint layers, correcting discolored varnish, cleaning grime off the surface, and reapplying varnish if necessary.

The final state should reflect as close to its original appearance as possible.
