Background
The Nez Perce National Historical Park (NEPE) is seeking to complete a Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) for Bear Paw Battlefield, located in north-central Montana. This site is historically significant as it marks the last armed conflict between the U.S. Government and the Nez Perce people in 1877, culminating in Chief Joseph's surrender. The battlefield has been recognized for its cultural and spiritual importance to the Nez Perce and other indigenous cultures, with several historical surveys conducted since its designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1988.

The CLI is essential for understanding and managing the cultural resources at this site, which spans approximately 360 acres of rolling grassland bisected by Snake Creek.
