Background

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the nation's medical research agency making important discoveries that improve health and save lives. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) improves dental, oral, and craniofacial health through research, research training, and the dissemination of health information. The Dental Clinical Resource Core (DCRC) conducts clinical research, provides training in clinical research through the Clinical Research Fellowship and provides an oral medicine and dental consultation service for the unique Clinical Center patient population. It is the goal of the DCRC to benefit both oral and systemic health. The DCRC has a continuing requirement for a part-time Oral Surgeon/Residency Trainer.

Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of this acquisition is to procure a part-time Oral Surgeon and Residency Trainer to facilitate delivery of treatment and consultative services in the Dental Clinic as well as providing training to the Dental Clinic's Oral Surgery Residents. With these services, it is expected that study subjects will be provided with surgical care, there will be appropriate management of subjects during their involvement in the research protocols, and residents will receive surgical training and management of medically complex patients in a research setting.

The DCRC has an ongoing requirement for a part-time Oral Surgeon/Residency Trainer.

Work Details
The contractor will provide a part-time Oral Surgeon to deliver treatment and consultative services in the Dental Clinic, as well as training for Oral Surgery Residents. Key tasks include:

- Performing routine and complicated oral surgery procedures such as oral biopsies, tooth extractions, surgical extractions, dental hip biopsies, implants, and consultations.
- Providing on-call backup for oral surgery-related consults.
- Training three or more rotating Oral Surgery Residents in both outpatient and inpatient care.
- Participating in weekly NIDCR Clinical Case Conferences.
- Ensuring the Oral Surgeon possesses necessary credentials including a valid US dental license, Acute Life Support Certificate, and malpractice coverage.
- Notifying NIH promptly if the Oral Surgeon is unable to perform duties.
- Granting the Oral Surgeon time to work at least one and one-half days per week.
- Providing a replacement if needed.
- Treating patients at their own clinic if unable to provide services at the Dental Clinic.

The contractor must ensure that the Oral Surgeon has a valid active US dental license, an Acute Life Support Certificate, medical malpractice coverage of $1 million per occurrence and $3 million aggregate. The Oral Surgeon must be credentialed at the NIH Clinical Center, have completed oral & maxillofacial surgery training from an accredited program, demonstrate good standing in all current facilities, maintain Continuing Medical Education requirements, and board certification in oral & maxillofacial surgery is desired. Additionally, the Oral Surgeon should possess knowledge of systemic biology and experience with unique populations.
