Description

This chiller is part of the process of creating dry gaseous hydrogen with a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer. As part of the PEM process hydrogen is created saturated with water. In order to use this hydrogen in fuel cells and other equipment the hydrogen must be dried. This chiller will provide cooled glycol to condense the water out of the hydrogen stream as the bulk reduction of water step of the process. NREL will be responsible for process piping to connect the chiller(s) to the drying equipment and heat exchanges. This purchase request is for chiller, glycol pump, and glycol buffer tank system with process port connections for glycol.

NREL's mission focuses on developing and integrating a broad array of energy technologies into robust, resilient systems to lower energy costs, drive economic growth, bolster national security, and deliver abundant and reliable energy.
This contract aims to procure a chiller system that is essential for the MultiMegawatt (MMW) electrolyzer project, which produces dry gaseous hydrogen.

Work Details
The contract includes the procurement of an outdoor air-cooled chiller system designed to cool glycol process fluid necessary for drying hydrogen produced by the MMW electrolyzer.
The specifications include:
- A total cooling capacity of at least 30 tons using multiple (minimum 2) self-contained units.
- Variable cooling demand capability with VFD controlled refrigeration compressor preferred.
- Use of R410A refrigerant is preferred but not mandatory.
- Process side specifications include a mixture of 50/50 propylene glycol and water with a flow rate of 90-120 gallons per minute (gpm).
- Expected fluid temperature should be between 35-37°F with supply pressure acceptable from 60 psi up to 100 psi.
- The purchase request also includes a glycol pump and glycol buffer tank system with process port connections for glycol.

Place of Performance
