Description

Posted: Dec. 19, 2016, 11:14 a.m. EST

PMA 209 will host an industry day to brief the Midair Collision Avoidance Capability (MCAC) program. The purpose of the MCAC system is to increase situational awareness (SA) and to alert the pilot of other aircraft that pose air-to-air collision threat. To accomplish this, MCAC is expected to use aural/visual/tactile alerts to notify the pilot of conflicting traffic and potential collisions. MCAC will need to sense traffic and track nearby aircraft computing their expected trajectories to evaluate the potential for midair collision. The system will need to interface with aircraft displays to present SA information and with the warning, caution, and advisory (WCA) systems to provide pilots with warnings of potential midair collisions.

Current requirements are defined in the Aircraft Survivability/ Initial Capabilities Document (AS/ICD) and the OPNAV Instruction 13210.1B Naval Aviation Policy for Aircraft Avionic Safety Systems.

The MCAC program will evaluate sensors, sensor fusion and collision avoidance algorithms for MCAC use in tactical, non-tactical and emissions control (EMCON) environments with MH-60R/S and AH-1Z/UH-1Y as the lead MCAC platforms. The MCAC program is expected to use an incremental acquisition approach and will address intruder aircraft encounter scenarios in tactical and non-tactical environments in Increment 1. Later increments will include additional platforms, collision avoidance for rendezvous and formation flight scenarios, and operation in the EMCON environment. Based on an MCAC AoA conducted in 2012 and responses to a Sources Sought announcement to Industry in February 2015 (reference #41011GW2), increment one is expected to utilize a military transponder as the primary sensor with Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) - and Mode 5 Level 2 Broadcast (M5L2B). Planned MCAC Increment 1 IOC is 2025 when the first 12 aircraft will be outfitted with the MCAC solution.

If your organization has a MCAC like capability or enabler we want to hear about it. Limited 30 minute time slots will be available on the day of the event and the day after to listen to industry and exchange ideas about your sensor and/or algorithm. If you also desire a one-on-one meeting please indicate so when you sign up and provide us with company information on the attached form .
