Purchase Agency: U.S. Coast Guard Surface Forces Logistics Center

The U.S. Coast Guard Surface Forces Logistics Center is purchasing a life analysis of the FM/MAN 16V28/33D Main Diesel Engine Crankshaft in the 100% PTO configuration. This configuration differs from the standard configuration and requires a 1m long crankshaft extension and an external journal bearing. The objective of this effort is to perform a fatigue life analysis of the crankshaft and extension shaft using finite element modeling and simulation (M&S) and material fatigue theories.

The timeframe for this acquisition is 20 weeks after contract award. The work will be performed by developing a finite element model (FEM) using software such as Abaqus, ANSYS, or Nastran FEA. The FEM will be used to calculate natural frequencies, response to input forcing functions, stress, strain, displacements, and fatigue life of the drive train components. The analysis will consider operational loads and conditions, including ship speed profiles and transient conditions such as start/stop and crash back.

The place of performance for this acquisition is not specified in the summary. However, it can be assumed that the work will be conducted at the contractor's facility or a designated testing facility. The summary also mentions that training will be provided to Coast Guard staff in the various analysis methods used for this tasking.

Overall, this opportunity involves conducting a comprehensive analysis of the crankshaft and extension shaft of the FM/MAN 16V28/33D Main Diesel Engine in the 100% PTO configuration. The goal is to assess the fatigue life of these components using advanced modeling and simulation techniques.
