Background
The USDA-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is undertaking a construction project to expand the Animal and Zoonotic Disease Center laboratory on the campus of USDA’s National Centers for Animal Health in Ames, Iowa.

This project aims to enhance the capabilities of the existing laboratory facilities, which are currently limited in functionality and compliance with safety standards. The new addition will provide necessary space for laboratory operations that support USDA's mission in animal health.

Work Details
The project involves constructing an approximately 13,500 square foot above-grade addition to Building 21, which will include a 6,400 square foot crawl space beneath the Biosafety Level Three (BSL-3) laboratory areas.

Additionally, about 2,200 square feet of office space within the existing building will be renovated. The primary objective is to relocate services from the Mycobacteriology/Brucella Laboratory (Building 401) to this new addition. Once the relocation is complete, Building 401 will be repurposed into a storage facility.

The contractor must ensure that laboratory operations continue during renovations and must implement measures to protect building occupants and maintain air quality throughout the construction process. Compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local building codes is mandatory.

Period of Performance
The contractor shall begin performance within 10 calendar days after receiving the notice to proceed and complete it within 730 calendar days.
