Background
The Air Force Research Laboratory Munitions Directorate (AFRL/RWTE) at Eglin Air Force Base, FL, is planning to award a single source purchase order for the replacement of the NX9000 Ion Source.

This acquisition is necessary to restore the operational capability of the NX9000 FIB-SEM system, which supports critical research and development related to high explosives.

Work Details
The contract involves the replacement of several components of the NX9000 FIB-SEM system, specifically:
1. LMIS2 ION Source (Part BEA-3809)
2. OL Aperture Assembly for V Column (Part AAB-2940)
3. O-Ring Set (Part AAB-2941)
4. R-Condenser Lens Assembly (Part EXCHK-W11102138), which must be exchanged with the removed unit returned to Hitachi.
5. Scintillator 7 Type (Part AAU-0100).

The NX9000 FIB-SEM is essential for conducting site-specific analysis, gas deposition, ablation of materials, and collecting energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy data or SEM images. The depletion of the LMIS2 ION source has rendered the FIB portion inoperable, limiting its research capabilities.

Period of Performance
The geographic location(s) the contract will be performed (if provided).

Place of Performance
Eglin Air Force Base, FL.

Bidder Requirements
Only Hitachi High-Tech America, Inc. is deemed capable of fulfilling this requirement due to their exclusive access to proprietary parts and their existing service contract for the NX9000 system. No other vendors can provide the necessary components without risking equipment failure.

Incumbent Analysis (see Incumbents section for more detail)
This opportunity appears to have a confirmed incumbent, as the prior contract FA282325C0034 awarded to Hitachi High-Tech America (valued at $268,680 for 05/25/25–05/24/28) covered an NX9000 service kit with a base year and two option years. The current requirement is for replacement of multiple NX9000 ion source–related components (including the LMIS2 ion source and associated assemblies/lens elements), which aligns with a continuation of maintaining and restoring the same NX9000 FIB-SEM system under the incumbent’s existing service support.
