Description

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), on behalf of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is conducting market research to explore capabilities related to the analysis of viral and immunological profiles in biospecimens. The primary aim of this initiative is to deepen the understanding of Long COVID, a condition that affects a notable percentage of individuals following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Despite its prevalence, Long COVID remains challenging to diagnose due to the absence of specific immunological or microbiological profiles and a standardized clinical definition.

This research effort seeks to address these challenges by analyzing biospecimens collected from participants in the Prospective Assessment of COVID-19 (PACC) in a Community study, which involves approximately 1,500 residents from Marshfield, Wisconsin. The project will focus on identifying differences in viral persistence and immune response markers between individuals with and without Long COVID. By examining stored samples for SARS-CoV-2-specific proteins and RNA, as well as immune response indicators such as IgG titers, researchers aim to uncover potential biomarkers that could inform diagnostic criteria and public health surveillance efforts.

The work will build upon preliminary findings from previous studies that have indicated prolonged immune responses and viral persistence as potential mechanisms underlying Long COVID. For instance, earlier research has shown significant differences in the presence of spike proteins between those affected by Long COVID and convalescent controls. By further investigating these aspects within a rural community cohort, this project hopes to contribute valuable insights into the nature of Long COVID and its impact on different populations.
