HALE Removal of 18 Trees in Kipahulu District

Background
Haleakalā National Park, located on the east side of Maui, was established in 1916 and encompasses over 33,000 acres. The park is divided into two districts: the Summit District and the Kīpahulu District. The Kīpahulu District faces challenges with invasive non-native trees that threaten archaeological sites. This contract aims to remove 18 invasive trees to improve the condition of an archaeological site (State Site Number 50-50-17-3763) and facilitate future plantings of native species.

Work Details
The contractor is responsible for cutting and removing 18 invasive non-native trees (mango, java plum, and False kamani) within a designated area of approximately 700 square meters. The tasks include:

1. Cutting down, dismantling, and removing all tree parts above ground while adhering to OSHA standards.
2. Ensuring safety by having spotters to keep visitors clear from work sites.
3. Temporarily closing a portion of the Kūloa Point Trail during operations.
4. Chipping all removed trees and placing wood chips in a designated Staging/Chipping Area.
5. Stacking any tree parts too large to chip in the same area.
6. Conducting work outside of Hawaiian Hoary Bat pupping season (June 1 - September 15).
7. Providing necessary tools and equipment for the job while ensuring vehicles are sanitized for invasive species inspection prior to entering the park.

Period of Performance
The contract will be performed from September 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025.
