Description

QGIS Application Improvements
Background
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Astrogeology Science Center (ASC) in Flagstaff, AZ, is seeking programming services to enhance the functionality of the QGIS open-source software. This initiative aims to support planetary data workflows and improve data visualization and analysis capabilities for planetary science, which is critical for missions such as Mars 2020 Rover and lunar Artemis planning.

Work Details
The contractor will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Eliminate EPSG:4326-related warnings when loading planetary datasets into QGIS.
- Modify QGIS to correctly set the base projection based on the first loaded planetary dataset.
- Resolve bugs in the geodesic measurement tool for accurate planetary radius calculations.
- Correct scale bar generation to accurately reflect the appropriate planetary radius.
- Enable proper handling of planetary projection codes (+proj=IAU) for WMS/WFS layers.

An optional task includes implementing support for geocentric X,Y,Z map projection (+proj=cart) in the 2D QGIS viewer. All deliverables must be committed to the QGIS GitHub repository and must meet specific acceptance criteria, including compatibility with current QGIS builds, documentation, and passing unit tests.

Period of Performance
07/07/2025 to 07/06/2026

Place of Performance
All work will be performed remotely using contractor-provided systems compatible with QGIS development environments.
