Background
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is seeking to procure an Automated Slide Scanner for the Systematic Entomology Laboratory (USDA-SEL) in Washington, DC. This acquisition aims to enhance the efficiency and quality of imaging slide-mounted insect specimens, which are critical for research and curation projects that support the USDA's mission.

- Whole slide scanning capability for standard 25mm x 75mm microscope slides
- Magnification up to 400X
- Automated tissue detection and autofocus features
- Barcode reader for enhanced workflow efficiency
- Integrated control computer with monitor
- Integrated Extended Depth of Field (EDF) software to produce focus-stacked images automatically.

Incumbent Analysis (see Incumbents section for more detail)
The prior contract 12305B23P0266 was awarded to Meyer Instruments for a “Glissando Slide Scanner with 20 slide capacity” (value $69,499; 09/23/23–10/23/23). The current RFQ similarly requires an automated slide scanner with whole-slide scanning and a 20-slide loading capacity, and it specifies OEM traceability to the Glissando RS20 or equal, indicating the new requirement may be a continuation or replacement of the same type of imaging equipment.
