Description

Subtopic Problem Statement/Description: This subtopic seeks to advance space weather operational applications and new enabling technologies that enhance our ability to predict, monitor, and mitigate the effects of space weather on critical infrastructure and human and robotic spaceflight missions. This effort aligns directly with national objectives outlined in the Promoting Research and Observations of Space Weather to Improve the Forecasting of Tomorrow (PROSWIFT) Act and the National Space Weather Strategy and Action Plan (NSWSAP) and seeks development and transition of emerging modeling and data analysis capabilities that will enable and enhance NASA spaceflight missions and protect astronauts and spacecraft in transit toward and landed on the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Innovative technologies and techniques are solicited that leverage existing or upcoming space weather data and mature models to create actionable intelligence for end users. The goal is to develop innovative tools and techniques that facilitate the transition of scientific knowledge into operational products. This includes the creation of value-added space weather products tailored to specific user groups, such as spacecraft operators, power grid managers, and communications companies. Efforts are sought to explore new markets for space weather data and services and to expand existing operational space weather products, as well as integrating NASA data into the decision-making processes of a diverse community of users with whom NASA may not frequently engage to help them mitigate risks. Particularly desired are efforts to bridge the gap between the heliophysics space weather program and diverse industries in geophysics, agriculture, autonomous transport, tourism and society at large by applying NASA data to the decision-making process of an end-user to mitigate the effects of space weather events. To ensure greater success for the Nation, evaluation of proposals will include increased focus on clearly identified needs in the marketplace and specific plans for commercializing the proposed technology. Proposals should clearly demonstrate a feasible path to transition from proof-of-concept toward commercialization and operational space weather capability, including engagement with subject matter experts and end users from the beginning of the technology development. Coordination with prospective end users, especially in non-traditional industries, is appropriate and encouraged. Engaging the resources of existing NASA capabilities, such as the Space Radiation Analysis Group (SRAG) at JSC, the Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) and Moon to Mars Space Weather Analysis Office (M2M SWAO) at GSFC, and the Short-term Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT) Center at MSFC, is also encouraged.
