The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis - CC
Background
The Division of Cardiovascular Sciences of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), is conducting a market survey to assess the availability and potential technical capability of small business firms to perform as the Research Coordinating Center as part of the renewal of the program entitled, “The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis was initiated to study the correlates, predictors, and progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a diverse population-based sample. The ethnic composition of the recruited cohort was 38% Caucasian, 28% African American, 22% Hispanic, and 12% Chinese.

Work Details
The Coordinating Center is expected to fulfill various activities including working cooperatively with other study centers and the NHLBI’s Representative (COR) in all relevant aspects of study development and execution, performing activities related to contract transition from the previous contractor if needed, enabling and facilitating biannual follow-up contacts of participants by field centers, performing abstraction of data from medical records for expert review of clinical events, updating geocoded data derived from participant addresses provided by the Field Centers, establishing and maintaining study databases, conducting statistical analyses, coordinating and facilitating a re-examination of MESA participants, preparing and submitting technical and financial reports, performing activities related to center transfer or study closeout as directed by the NHLBI Project Office, providing research training experiences via NIH Diversity Supplements, mentoring early stage investigators from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
