Background
The US Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) Midwest Region Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program continues its long tradition of improving habitat on private lands working with local communities. The Midwest Region is part of the prairie plains ecosystem and was once dominated by native tallgrass prairie throughout much of the area, especially west and central. The western expansion of the United States in the 1800s brought forth a need to grow food and fiber for early settlers, meaning much of the historical tall grass prairie landscape was converted to other uses. That large-scale conversion has left only about 1% of the original prairie on the landscape, making it one of the most imperiled ecosystems on the continent.
Tremendous opportunities exist in the Midwest Region to restore grasslands and associated habitats, like goat prairies in the Driftless area, loess bluffs along the Missouri River, transitional oak savanna and open woodlands, and native grasslands. Because of declining grassland birds and pollinators (National Priority), and the ecological services native grasslands provide, our call to action is to continue working with partners in places where native prairie and associated habitats can be restored and enhanced, where deep rooted prairie plants can store water and carbon and help reduce erosion, and where ranchers can implement conservation grazing systems that will withstand drought, reduce costs, and improve the health of their herds. These combined actions will contribute to the resilience that our grassland ecosystems once had.
