Spongy Moth Slow the Spread Mating Disruption
Type: Forecast • Source ID: FY27_003680
Overview
Description
The spongy moth is an introduced pest that causes great harm to forests. The USDA-FS cooperative program to slow the spread of spongy moth (STS) is the world's largest user of mating disruption for pest management, treating hundreds of thousands of acres each year across the 11 states that implement the STS program (NC VA TN KY WV OH IN IL IA WI and MN). This pesticide releases the active ingredient (the spongy moth attraction pheromone) slowly over a period of months when adults are active. This limits reproduction and slows the spread of this regulated pest.
