Description
The "Remove the Risk (RTR)" pulbic education campaign includes a series of radio and television PSAs, integrated digital media promotion, digital and print billboards, and in-store displays and promotion (convenience stores & pharmacies), targeted towards women, 35-64 years old. In 2021, in collaboration with CBS/Viacom, FDA launched the "FDA Health Playbook," an extension of the RTR campaign, featuring additional PSAs which sought to widen the targeted audience to include young adults and males, 18-64 years old, by utilizing hall of fame and US Olympic athletes as the PSA's talent/spokespersons. The goal behind the widened targeted audience for the "Health Playbook" is to continue increasing the impact of FDA's RTR campaign by expanding awareness and outreach regarding the risk of undisposed opioids to targeted demographics that were excluded from the initial RTR campaign. The RTR campaign and the newly implemented FDA Health Playbook supports HHS/FDA's Strategic Priority #2 ("Protect the Health of Americans Where They Live, Learn, Work, and Play") by: - empowering people (e.g, prescribed opioid users, caretakers of prescribed opioid users) to make informed choices for healthier living; - reducing the impact of mental and substance use disorders through prevention, early intervention, treatment, and recovery support (i.e. utilizing public outreach to expand awareness of the risks of not disposing of unused opioids to prevent/intervene in cases of non-prescribed opioid use and opioid use disorder); and - preparing for and responding to public health emergencies (i.e., the ongoing opioid crisis). Additionally, since 2016, FDA has been repeatedly called upon by Congress and patient advocacy groups to assist in government-wide efforts to end and/or reduce the effects of the opioid crisis.
