Persistent Wide Area Air Surveillance (PWAAS)

Type: Forecast • Source ID: F2026072834

Overview

Description
The Department of Homeland Security s (DHS) objective is to enhance Air Domain Awareness by employing additional surveillance systems and technologies that continuously surveil established areas of responsibilities (AORs) and detect all airborne objects within them, in all weather conditions across all environments. Persistent coverage, high probability of detection (80-100%), minimal operator burden, and integration into the existing Air Marine Operations (AMO) architecture align with the mission needs in areas experiencing high levels of illicit activities inclusive of non-cooperative, low-RCS objects like UAS and ultralights (Groups 1-4). Ground-based radar systems with elevated radar systems augment the ground base infrastructure that prioritizes robust detection capabilities of the Unified Mission Task (UMT) continuum, enabling effective surveillance, identification, classification, and response.
