Countering Chemical Weapons Threats
Type: Forecast
Overview
Description
CTR's Chemical Security Program (CSP) is a counterproliferation initiative that prevents U.S. adversaries from acquiring materials, equipment, and expertise for chemical weapons (CW) programs. CSP works with frontline countries to identify, interdict, and investigate high-risk chemical transfers, enforce U.S. sanctions, and promote chemical security standards. The program disrupts efforts to weaponize pharmaceutical-based agents, builds partner capacity to recognize and attribute CW attacks, and prevents illicit chemical shipments. CSP also fosters coordination between partner governments and private industry to strengthen counterproliferation efforts. Through targeted, preventive programming, CSP closes security gaps exploited by adversaries, enhances U.S. and partner resilience, and supports global chemical security while minimizing burdens on legitimate business.
