Description

The XM320 Grenade Launcher Module (GLM) program is a critical component of the Army's modernization priorities, specifically supporting the goal to build a more lethal force as outlined in the National Defense Strategy (NDS). The primary objective of this procurement line is to enhance joint lethality in contested environments by providing soldiers with a modern, reliable, and versatile 40mm low-velocity grenade launcher. The XM320 GLM is designed as a direct replacement for the legacy M203 series of grenade launchers, which have been in service for several decades on M16 Rifles and M4 Carbines.

The XM320 Grenade Launcher Module is a modular weapon system that can be mounted under the barrel of a rifle or carbine, or used in a stand-alone configuration. Its design incorporates several advancements over its predecessor, including an integrated leaf sight, improved safety features, and a side-loading, unrestricted breech that allows for the use of longer 40mm projectiles, both NATO standard and non-standard. The system also features a modern double-action trigger/firing system, which increases reliability and safety, and a new pistol grip that eliminates the need to use the M4 magazine as a hand grip.

One of the key objectives of the program is to improve soldier survivability and effectiveness in complex terrain by providing a weapon system that is both durable and adaptable. The use of lightweight material composites in the XM320 GLM enhances its durability while reducing the overall weight burden on soldiers. The procurement also includes system components such as a hand-held Laser Range Finder (LRF) and the Grenadier Sighting System (GSS), which are delivered with each system to improve targeting accuracy and operational effectiveness.

To further support evolving operational requirements, the XM320 GLM is being equipped with additional components, including a leaf sight, barrel, improved butt stock, and the XM100 40mm fuze programmer. These enhancements enable the system to support advanced munitions such as the High Explosive Air Burst (HEAB) and the M433E1, which are part of the new 40mm Family of Ammunition (FOA). This ensures that the system remains compatible with future ammunition developments and provides increased capability to the warfighter.

The Grenadier Sighting System (GSS), a required component of the XM320 GLM, is also included in this procurement line. The GSS is in full-rate production and is fielded in accordance with the Army Acquisition Objective (AAO) for the XM320. The inclusion of the GSS is intended to maximize the effectiveness of the XM320 by providing advanced sighting capabilities, thereby enhancing first-round hit probability and overall mission success.

Funding for the XM320 GLM program is justified by its necessity for both active and reserve components of the Armed Forces, supporting not only traditional combat missions but also homeland defense, domestic emergency response, and military support to civil authorities. This aligns with Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Act (P.L.110-181), which emphasizes the importance of equipping the military for a broad range of operational scenarios.
