Description
The SSN Combat Control Systems program is a critical initiative under the Navy's Other Procurement category, focusing on Ordnance Support Equipment. This program aims to enhance the combat control capabilities of submarine platforms through the integration of the AN/BYG-1 system. The AN/BYG-1 system consolidates tactical control, weapon/payload control, and Tactical Local Area Network functions. This enables submarines to maintain an updated tactical picture and integrate seamlessly with battlegroups. Additionally, the system enhances torpedo interfaces and supports various payload capabilities such as TOMAHAWK and Harpoon missiles.
A significant goal of the SSN Combat Control Systems program is to address obsolescence issues by implementing continuous hardware enhancements and software upgrades. These upgrades are executed through Tech Insertion (TI) kits, developed periodically, which form the baseline for future procurements. This ensures that all submarine platforms maintain cutting-edge capabilities. The program is part of the Submarine Warfare Federated Tactical Systems (SWFTS), requiring coordinated installations with other interdependent systems.
The program also includes several sub-programs aimed at specific enhancements. The Combat Systems Technology Refresh focuses on procuring engineering changes and ordnance alterations to resolve fleet-reported issues with existing AN/BYG-1 systems. It also involves procuring weapons launch systems and training infrastructure to support TacLAN and cybersecurity improvements. Another sub-program, Submarine Combat Control System Modernization, targets hardware and software upgrades across all submarine platforms.
Additionally, the Electronic Charting Display Information System sub-program ensures that all U.S. Navy submarines are equipped with advanced electronic charting capabilities. This involves integration testing, certification, and fielding responsibilities managed by the PEO UWS Submarine Combat and Weapons Control Program Office. These efforts aim to maintain a robust and resilient combat control infrastructure capable of supporting current and future naval operations.
