Description
The Space Situation Awareness Systems program, managed by the Air Force, is focused on enhancing the capabilities of the Space Force to identify and understand factors that could impact space operations. This initiative is crucial for maintaining national security, safety, and economic stability by monitoring space objects and activities. The program aims to develop advanced network sensors and improve information integration across the space surveillance network. It supports engineering studies, technology forecasting, modernization initiatives, and system development to ensure comprehensive space domain awareness.
A key component of this program is the Deep Space Advanced Radar Concept (DARC), designed to detect and track deep space objects continuously. DARC serves as an additional sensor within the space surveillance network, providing enhanced capacity for global coverage of deep space object custody. The program's efforts include prototyping and technology demonstrations to evaluate integrated technologies in realistic environments. This aligns with the broader goal of augmenting existing capabilities with new technological advancements.
The DARC initiative involves developing one operational site with plans for two additional sites globally to ensure comprehensive radar coverage. The project utilizes existing Department of Defense contracts for science and technology development and data analysis activities. Northrop Grumman has been awarded a contract as the Prime System Integrator through a competitive process under the Space Enterprise Consortium agreement. The program's strategy includes a follow-on acquisition pathway based on the success of initial prototypes.
In FY 2024, efforts related to DARC were realigned under a specific authority to integrate with other developmental programs within the Space Situation Awareness Systems framework. This strategic alignment aims to address funding shortfalls and explore alternative pathways for future development phases. The Department of the Air Force continues to assess options for addressing these challenges, ensuring that the objectives of maintaining robust space domain awareness are met effectively.
